Virus infestation warning messages as phishing scam

We are receiving more and more calls from terrified people, who, while browsing internet are suddenly getting messages on their screen saying that their computer might be infected, and they need to call a number on their screen immediately.

It is rather terrifying to see something like that show up on your screen, and it is easy to panic and fall for this scam. By calling the number, conveniently provided by the scammers, you are, actually, endangering your personal and financial information. Usually, a person on the other end of the phone line will gain access to your computer and all the data stored on it, including credentials to your financial institutions and your personal information.

What to do when you have such message show up on your screen? The best way to deal with this situation is to turn off your system. Don’t click any buttons, don’t call the number, just turn off your computer. If it is impossible to do it the usual way, press your power button for 10-20 seconds and your system will power down. After your system is off for another 10-20 seconds turn it on again and run an antivirus scan. If you have a good antivirus, it should detect and deal with any leftover malware and you should be good to go. Next step is to go and change your online credentials to all the financial institutions you have accessed via your computer.

If you panicked and called the number, don’t give out any credit card numbers, any bank or personal information, hang up immediately! Power down your computer and call your IT company for help. After that, go and change all your online credentials to all the financial institutions you have accessed via your computer.
